How its work ?
Black panels are installed on the roof of the house, of the shed, or on a specially constructed structure. Thanks to an automated thermostat (2), cool water from the pool is sent, after the pool filter, towards the black panels where the water is warmed up by solar radiations (3). The energy captured by the black panels is transferred to the running water inside the panels, circulating in small tubes for better heat transfer. The water temperature warms up a few degrees every time it runs trough the panels, and the hot water is then sent back to the pool (4).
It is very important to remember that the sun radiates its energy even on cloudy days. There is less heat radiation during cloudy time, but there is still enough for the system to operate.
To be at maximum efficiency, the system needs to be adapted to your specific needs. In the case of a solar pool heating system, needs will change depending on your geographical region, the size of your pool and the orientation of your panels in relation with the sun. The chart below is an approximation of the number of panels necessary in the south of Ontario and Québec. Roof inclination plays also a role in the number of panels.

Use free solar energy
- Extend swimming season
- Warm up the pool by about 5 to 8 degree Fahrenheits from standard season temperature: that make a huge difference
- No noise
- No daily fees
- No maintenance fees
- No energy consumption and pollution
- Comes with an incredible 12 year warranty on parts and labour + a limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturer (1)
And mostly, starts your swimming season earlier, and ends later. Typically,, a conventional heater owner will try to use it carefully to save money. With a solar system the cost of running the system is the same as simply filtering your water!

Our Projects
On both sides of the Ottawa river, lot of families heat their pool with our solar systems since the 90's. They were early adopters and their system are still in place. Ask us for references

Cost of running a Solar System in Ontario: Almost free
Structure of electricity tarif in Ontario is different compare to Québec. In Québec, you always pay the higher price to filter and heat a pool. In Ontario, you can save money by running you pool pump during the night only.
As "On Peak time" is at the same time as the sun peak time, cost for running your filter pump in Ontario is more expensive during the day compare to the night. To save money, people often decides to run the filter pump at night only instead of the day. However, running a "Solar" heating system implies running your filter pump during the day.
What is difference in cost?
Around 50$ to 75 $ per season. What is the cost for a season with a gas heater or thermopump... Could be thousand of dollars
Some explanation are presented below:
Figure 1 is the Hydro One price structure in 2017 (It is cheaper in 2023)
Figure 2 is the cost of running of pump during the day vs running at night around 75$ a year.
2018 Scenario 1-2 show cost to operate a variable speed pump at low speed (3/4HP) and high speed (1.5HP), 18 hours a day.
2018 Scenario 3-4 show cost to run an high speed pumps 1.5HP running 18 hours a day.
